Fighting COVID-19 Around the World
We continue to fight COVID-19 and support vaccination efforts in the US and around the world.
Across our global programs, we continue to distribute gowns, masks, face shields and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep our first responders, like those pictured below in Venezuela, safe as they continue their lifesaving work.
In Lebanon, we’re providing COVID-19 home care. Our team is providing assessments, needed vitamins and medications to patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms.
Supporting Vaccination Efforts
Vaccines save lives. That’s why in South Sudan, the Philippines and other countries around the world, we are working with partners and ministries of health to launch COVID-19 vaccination campaigns—so that everyone, no matter their location, can have access to a lifesaving vaccine.
In the Philippines, we recently supported a vaccination campaign to protect the community of Angono from the virus.
In South Sudan, our team has vaccinated more than 4,930 people in Malakal, Wau and in the Juba camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs). We also trained healthcare workers on COVID-19 vaccination protocols.
Our team in Lebanon is supporting the Ministry of Public Health in its vaccination rollout plan. They recently delivered more than 240,000 syringes and other supplies to 24 public hospitals participating in the national vaccination plan.
Providing Lifesaving Support in Afghanistan
As the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan becomes even more dire, millions of Afghan people are in need of emergency assistance. We’ve been responding to increasing healthcare, psychosocial support and hygiene needs, and have so far deployed five mobile health teams in Kabul to support internally displaced people living in camps.
We have also continued our health and water, sanitation and hygiene programs, reaching almost 220,000 people since August.
Continuing to Support the People of Kentucky
We continue to support communities affected by the tornadoes that on December 10–11 ravaged a swath of more than 250 miles, devastating counties throughout the region.
During January, we provided staffing support that has enabled KentuckyCare, a federally qualified health center we’ve partnered with, to meet the needs associated with the surge in demand caused by the storms—including home health visits, shelter health visits and coverage for staff affected by the tornadoes.
Improving Tropical Disease Prevention in Venezuela
Thanks to the Astellas Global Health Foundation, we’re able to continue our efforts in Venezuela to help treat and beat neglected tropical diseases, and improve vector-borne and tropical disease prevention.
Our medical staff delivered malaria awareness sessions and distributed PPE and malaria supplies to communities in need in the country.
Responding to the Tigray Conflict
It has been more than a year since the start of the Tigray conflict—yet northern Ethiopia’s security situation remains volatile.
Our 23 mobile health and nutrition teams in the region have reached more than 590,000 IDPs settled in 39 sites. Our teams are also providing integrated health, nutrition, gender-based violence, mental health and psychosocial support, and water, sanitation and hygiene services.
Providing Healthcare Services for People with Disabilities in Lebanon
We’re so thankful for our amazing team in Lebanon! They held events for persons with disabilities in Bekaa and Mount Lebanon, conducting interactive awareness sessions on the rights of persons with disabilities to access healthcare services in the country.
Delivering Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Services Worldwide
In Yemen, our team distributed 200 water-survival boxes to internally displaced people in the Al Hussein district. Each water-survival box contains essential hygiene supplies, a family water filter, kitchen supplies, tools and more.
Thanks to our community health officers, like Eman in Jordan, we’re able to conduct organized shelter-to-shelter visits and educate the community about preventive and curative health services. One of the initiatives that we undertake in Azraq refugee camp is to teach children proper handwashing techniques, helping to decrease the transmission of disease.
Last year, for the first time, our mission in Ukraine created a team of water, sanitation and hygiene promoters to take COVID-19 prevention messaging directly to communities. Nearly 1,000 people heard COVID-19 prevention messages and received hygiene kits as part of the risk communication and hygiene promotion activities that we conducted in eight locations.
Looking Back at 2021
2021 brought its load of challenges—from fighting COVID-19 to responding to disasters around the world—but we were able to accomplish so much, thanks to your lifesaving support.
👋 2021. This year, people supported our work in so many ways — proving time and time again that we’re strongest when we work together. Take a look back at the highlights. ⬇️ https://t.co/3CuTf2SB8v
